Tenure-track Faculty Position, Sanitation Technologies & Approaches for Emerging Regions, University of Oklahoma, USA [no deadline given]

THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA Water Technologies for Emerging Regions (WaTER) Center invites applications to fill a tenure-track faculty position in Sanitation Technologies and Approaches for Emerging Regions. This new position reflects the strong commitment of the University of Oklahoma to expand the pioneering work of the OU WaTER Center (WaTER.ou.edu) in response to the UN Millennium Development Goals (specifically Target 7.c). The WaTER Center is targeting applications at the Associate Professor level but will consider other ranks for highly qualified applicants.

An earned Ph.D. in engineering, science or a closely related field is required. The
successful candidate should have a record of funding and publishing peer reviewed journal articles on sustainable sanitation technologies and approaches in developing countries including rural and/or urban applications. The successful candidate will teach courses and mentor undergraduate and graduate students working on sanitation for developing countries. Preference will be given to candidates with extended field experience in developing countries and the ability to quickly develop and maintain research programs focused on developing countries. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience integrating technology, business, behavioral and/or health issues as well as those whose work overlaps with issues common to emerging regions in
the US.

Overview

Alaska Native and American Indian (AN/AI) people suffer from the highest rates of various water-related diseases in the US. To address this disparity, the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC)  has obtained funding to establish a center to expand the water and sanitation services available for AN/AI people and service providers. The center will have the following objectives:

  • Water & Sanitation Research: Conduct research to document the health benefits of water and sanitation improvements; answer research questions of interest to AN/AI people, tribes, tribal organizations, and service providers; produce data to help inform policy decisions related to provision of water and sanitation services; serve as an entry point for non-Indian Health Service (IHS) entities wishing to conduct research of interest to AN/AI people, tribes, tribal organizations, and service providers; and establish a research agenda to better organize internal and external research efforts.
  • Education & Promotion: Promote behaviors that lead to reduced rates of water and sanitation-related disease; provide technical assistance and materials to guide education and promotion efforts; and increase utility revenue collection by increasing confidence in treated water.
  • Appropriate Technologies: Help guide development of innovative and appropriate water and sanitation technologies for small tribal communities.
  • Emerging Threats: Identify and address emerging issues threatening the provision of sustainable water and sanitation services in tribal communities.
  • Advocacy: Advocate for increased access to potable water and safe sewage disposal for all AN/AI people.

Qualifications

The most successful employees have an adventurous spirit and a strong desire to create healthier lives for our AN/AI customers. Our work is challenging and the work environment is demanding. The work requires a combination of technical ability, cultural sensitivity and flexibility. Travel to remote villages is typically via small aircraft and village accommodations are rustic. Environmental conditions can be extreme. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Research experience: Substantial research experience and hold a doctoral degree in environmental health science, public health, epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Informed about water issues: Knowledge of rural water and sanitation issues.
  • Experience with indigenous populations: Experience working with Alaska Native and/or American Indian populations.
  • Fund Raising: Ability to acquire external funding through the writing successful grant proposals and/or networking.

Organizational Information

The new water center will be housed with the ANTHC Division of Environmental Health and Engineering. ANTHC is the largest and most comprehensive tribally-managed health organization in the US. Together with our tribal partners, we work to provide a broad range of healthcare and public health services for Alaska Native people. ANTHC has about 2000 employees, 40% of which are AN/AI.

This position is based in Anchorage, Alaska. Anchorage is a modern city with a population of about 290,000 beautifully situated between the ocean and the mountains. The city has a unique combination of first-class lodging, dining, shopping, nightlife, and outdoor recreational areas. It has more than 135 miles of paved, multi-use trails and another 300 miles of wilderness trails and provides easy access to America’s most scenic and undisturbed wilderness areas.
